It's not often these days that an American producer will emerge out of obscurity and rise to techno prominence on the strength of two singles, but Claude VonStroke has done just that in less than eighteen months.
Of course, VonStroke (aka Barclay Crenshaw) didn't come out of nowhere. Based in San Francisco, Crenshaw first got seriously involved in electronic music in 2003 while producing a 5-hour documentary on the genre (called Intellect), in which he interviewed many of the scene's top names on how to succeed. As a result of the secrets he learned, he decided to start his own label, Dirtybird, and soon after took up the alias Claude VonStroke. Then came Deep Throat and Who's Afraid of Detroit, those two singles that dug into the psyche of almost every DJ who gave them a spin and have since become mainstays of the international dancefloor.
In 2006, VonStroke released his debut album, Beware of the Bird. Crenshaw arrives at MUTEK this year with a crateful of vinyl, ready to put his stamp on Montreal's hot summer afternoons.
